Nobody has
an intention to spill some coffee or water on the laptop, while holding a cup
in the hand. However, this incident has been marked as one among the top four
reasons behind laptop damage. The liquid may slowly move to the sensitive
components of the laptop and the compact design of laptop is another issue,
which makes it more annoying.
It is, of
course, a matter to worry about. But, do not panic. Take certain steps to make
the issue less severe or completely avoid any harm to your system.
Let it dry in air:
It is a very
common happening to spill few drops of water on the laptop. In such a case, you
should remove the battery and unplug the adapter. Turn the laptop upside down
and let air pass through the keyboard properly. You can also, use a cooling fan
to blow it dry.
Do not pass
any heat to dry up your system, as it may damage the plastic components of the
laptop. It should be fine in two days. If you don’t it to be moist, then you
can start your laptop to use it.
Use a drying agent:
If the water
has gotten deep inside the laptop, it is better to make use of a drying agent
like silica gel or some uncooked rice. Silica gel is usually, shipped with the
laptop. It desiccants the moisture from the laptop and before using your
laptop, wipe it off with a soft cloth.
Remove the keyboard:
Keyboard is
the zone that is prone to water spills. If such unfortunate thing happens,
remove the keyboard as per the instructions on the manual or on the
manufacturer’s website. Wipe off the remaining water on the laptop, once the
keyboard is removed. You can also make use of a mild cleaner on a soft cloth,
to get off the moisture on the system.
Disassemble the laptop:
If none of
the cleaning technique proves to be good, then disassembling your laptop is the
only solution and it is quite risky, though. To disassemble your computer, it
is good to refer the manufacturer’s website. Disassembling the laptop, will let
you wipe the nook and cranny of every component.
Do remember
to use 99 percent isopropyl alcohol. If you use any liquid that is less than
pure, then there are chances that the liquid will leave residue, even after
evaporation. The residue can be a serious issue of a short circuit.
So, you have
few first aids that you can follow after a spill. Faster you do it, better it
is for your system. If nothing seems to work, then take your laptop immediately
to a service center.

A wet laptop is a not a dead laptop...yet! I've tried doing these tips that you recommended but to no avail. I guess my laptop is meant to be broken. Good thing I had the opportunity to dispatch it safely by selling it at Cash For Laptops and problem solved.
